Plan the road, not only the destination
Navigation may offer a very short local road that is steeper or narrower than the main approach. Stay on signed main routes when uncomfortable, leave space on bends and use a lower gear for controlled descents.
- Never stop in a tunnel except for an emergency.
- Do not follow a route past access restrictions.
- Turn around safely rather than forcing a narrow road.
Parking signals
Official tourism guidance describes white markings as generally free, blue as paid and yellow as no parking, while local signs and reserved spaces still take priority. Check hotel parking dimensions before choosing a large vehicle.
- Photograph an unfamiliar rental bay on return.
- Do not leave valuables visible.
- Allow time for central Funchal parking.
